Nancy Petry Scholarship Guidelines


One award will be made to a U.S. student currently enrolled in a graduate degree program for study abroad during the 2009-2010 academic year.  Students are not restricted to certain countries or fields of study although the committee encourages applicants in the fields of environmental studies, international business, or economics.  Students should demonstrate some proficiency with the language of their chosen country if the program proposed is for a non-English speaking country.  One award of $5,000 will be awarded for the 2009-2010 academic year. 

Eligibility Criteria
•  The applicant must be a U.S. citizen who is enrolled in a graduate degree program at an IIE Educational Associate Institution of higher learning in the Rocky Mountain region (click here to view map of Rocky Mountain region) at the time of application.  The following link has a list of Associate Institutions http://iienetwork.org/?p=27452.  Please verify your eligibility before applying using the links above.
 
•  Applicants should demonstrate commitment to serious study abroad as a complement to academic and career goals.  Evidence of this commitment should be presented in the “Statement of Purpose” supplement section of the application.

•  At-large students are not eligible for this scholarship.  At large students are those not in the IIE Association network or students not enrolled in a degree-seeking program.

•  The applicant must be assured that credit will be given for the study or research undertaken by the U.S. college or university through which s/he is applying.


Supplementary Requirements
In addition to completing the IIE/RMRC 2009 Scholarship Application, scholarship candidates must submit the following:

•  Statement of Purpose:  Why do you want to study abroad?  What are your academic and career goals for studying abroad and how do they compare to the mission and goals mentioned above?  How will the Nancy Petry Scholarship help you meet your academic, professional, and personal goals?  How will you apply what you learn upon returning to your home institution and in your career? 

•  Study Abroad Program Description:  Describe your proposed course of study, including formal courses in language and other subjects. You should specifically list the number of hours of classroom language study you will engage in per week.   Describe any regional cultural activities that are integrated into your study abroad program. Explain why you have selected this particular study abroad experience, and explain how this program relates to your academic and career goals.  Explain why you chose this particular country to pursue this program of study.  Include a list of any administrative support available to you in your proposed program (e.g., facilities, resident director, housing, etc.).

•completed “Faculty Reference” and “Academic Advisor Reference” forms (included in application).

•Please request an official, cumulative transcript be sent to the address below.

•Please include a copy of your resumé. 

•The postmarked deadline for returning the completed application form, letters of reference and transcript is March 2, 2009.  Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

•Upon completion of the study program, the grant recipient will be required to submit a brief (one page) report of his/her accomplishments indicating how the IIE grant was used and to what benefit.
